2.1" Petrified Wood sphere from Madagascar.  This 55mm sphere is carved from Petrified Wood with great color and wood grained patterns.  Petrified wood is a type of fossil consisting of fossil wood which has been replaced minerals, most often a silicate such as Quartz, while retaining the original structure of the wood.  This process occurs underground when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to lack of oxygen.  Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits in the plant's cells, and as the plant decays away a stone mould takes its place.  Includes a handcarved tripod wood stand as pictured.  A wonderful Petrified Wood sphere for display, collection, and study.
