What is ambience?
Why is it important?
These are questions home owners ask themselves all the time.
First of all ambience is created by you.
Secondly ambience is the character and atmosphere in your home or business.
There is something for each of the five senses; sight, sound, feel, touch, and scent.
I will talk about each of these in the following paragraphs.
The first is sight; your eyes.
What do you see?
How does what you see make you feel? Are the colors in the room inviting?
Is the room beckoning you to enter, linger, stay awhile?
What do you see?
Is there art on the walls?
If so what kind?
What kind of lighting?
Is it harsh, soft, romantic?
Is the room sterile feeling like a hospital room?
Only you can decide.
Next is sound.
Is there music playing in the background?
What kind?
Is it loud? Soft?
What?
Does it compliment the mood you are trying to create?
Is it relaxing?
These are the questions you must answer when decorating your home.
The next sense is feel.
This is a little harder to create.
It is the sum total of everything in the room from the furnishings to lighting even color.
This is where different styles take over.
Things like “Shabby Chic”, “Modern”, “Nautical”, “Country”
etc.
The next sense is touch.
This has to do with fabrics, items in the room that can be picked up and looked at more closely.
Lastly, scent.
What do you smell?
Nothing?
Or the other extreme is the scent overpowering.
My favorite scent is just there, soothing, relaxing, not over powering.
Everything in the above paragraphs is what makes up ambience.
It is the sum total of it all.
It is a reflection of you.
Your home should be a story of who you are reflected in the art, furnishings, music, etc.
Your home is not a place where you just crawl into and exist.
Ambience actually starts outside your home before you enter.
I hope I have shed some insight on the subject.
Finally, walk through your home.
Does it have the “it” factor?
How do you feel?
What would you change?
Do you feel “SPECIAL”?
