Description
Conifer petrified wood limb with pocket rot (Pinales Order)Miocene, Chalk Lake Formation
"The Bruneau Wood Pile"
Bruneau, Idaho
This outstanding limb section has GREAT PRESERVATION, NICE WOODY CHARACTER and it is priced right. This is a specimen that will be immediately recognized as petrified wood by even the most novice of observers.
This one is cut and polished on one end so that you can see the excellent preservation.
It is somewhat unique in that it is permineralized by the mineral francolite, a member of the apatite group. This contrasts with the more typical petrified wood that is permineralized by the silica mineral, chalcedony.
It is a limb of a conifer - enlarge the face-on photo and note the pocket rot occurring along some of the growth rings.
It measures 1.25" x 1" on the polished face and it is 2" in length.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
