    Description

    Grape Family (
    Vitaceoxylon sp.
    )
    Trout Creek Formation, Miocene
    Zimmerman Ranch at the McDermitt diggings, Oregon/Nevada
    Recently, one of our favorite digger/cutter wholesalers undertook a dig on the Zimmerman Ranch (with a member of the Zimmerman family!).  The location was a bit of a distance from the traditional Zimmerman Ranch digging site that has produced all of that beautiful easily-recognizable wood with the reddish-hued rind.  This new dig (and it was undertaken with a backhoe so it was rather deep) produced a wide variety of fossil woods with really good preservation.  The rules of taxonomy require that we include any fossil grape family specimens in the form genus Vitaceoxylon but it is clear that this limb section has excellent similarity to several of the living genera of creeping vines in the Vitaceae Family
    .  As such, the vessels are very, very large (nearly 200 microns in size) producing a wood that shows consistent  throughout the annual growth cycle.  Please see our photomicrographs of this specimen.  In addition to the wonderful preservation, this vine section has nice woody character along the exterior length.  New dig; great structure; fine wood like character; perfect display size; overall handsome appearance and great price.  Who could ask for more???  It measures
    3.25” x 1.75" on the polished face and it is a 4” long vine section.
    We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so!  Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
