Description
Up for your consideration is a piece of Joshua Tree (fossil genus and species isProtoyucca shadishii
) which is one of the most rare species of petrified wood that one can collect (others include
Ginkgo
,
Mennegoxylon
, and
Trochodendron
). Joshua Tree is a monocot - it sends up only one cotyledon from the seed rather than two - and silicified petrifications of monocots are very rare in the fossil record (palm is the single exception to this). A lot of the Joshua Tree suffered from heart rot (typical for monocots) and the centers were all gone before petrification started. Since it is a monocot, it does not have annual growth rings. Instead, it has an inner primary cylinder and an outer secondary cylinder. But, very, very little of the species has ever been found in the fossil record.
This material comes from the vicinity of Badger Flat in Humboldt County, Nevada. It is Miocene in age and comes out of the Virgin Valley Formation..
The woody portion in this
Protoyucca
specimen is entirely from the outer secondary cylinder area of the trunk. Take a close look at the photos and photomicrographs - the woody part is rather colorful - somewhat untypical for this material. There is remarkably outstanding preservation of the vascular structure of the secondary cylinder as shown in our photomicrographs. The specimen measures approximately 3 x 2.25 inches on the polished face and it is an end cut up to .75 inches thick. The woody portions of the specimen are encased by a volcanic ash lahar. Lahars occur when the hot volcanic ash flows downhill picking up tiny bits of rock and sand. We have shown a photomicrograph of the lahar portion which has numerous angular shaped tiny rock fragments.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
