    Description

Well, we are not really into rocks that look like animals or famous people or the like.  However, this "birdlike" uncut/unpolished stick of petrified wood sat proudly in the display case of a good friend for decades and it reportedly garnered "ooos" and "aahs" from many who opined it looked exactly like a nesting dove or a marine mammal of some kind.  For us, it was enough that it came from the Miocene
Ash of the Juniper Mountain Volcanic Center  along the C
oyote Grade in the Shares Basin of Owyhee County, Idaho.
This specimen was collected in some of the ash beds east of highway 95, south of Marsing, Idaho in the 1950s by the brother-in-law of one of our favorite petrified wood cutter/dealers.  We were fortunate to be able to purchase a few of the specimens this person collected nearly three-quarters of a century ago.  The piece is distinctive - a covering of white volcanic ash on the fossil wood and the exterior has an obvious water worn appearance indicating it weathered out of the ash and lay in a riverbed for quite some time prior to being found.  We searched the Internet for more information about the location but found only a few references to collecting small chips of wood and agate in some of the area's streambeds.   There are quite a few outcrops of volcanic ash in this part of Owyhee County and one of them produced this beautiful specimen all those years ago!
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so!  Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
