Description
Up for auction today is a gorgeous Northwood Good Luck ruffled bowl in not often seen aqua opal base glass. Unmarked as many Northwood pieces are, but guaranteed old and produced in the early 1900's, making it over 100 years old. Gorgeous dark butterscotch finish, nice opal tips and just outstanding iridescent colors with pinks, blues, reds and yellows dominating the interior and has the ribbed exterior. There are some "inclusions" in the glass and will show in photos, this is not damage, and is part of manufacturing, but the lines are visible when bowl is held to the light, not visible when on display. These "inclusions" are likely from some impurities being in the mold when the molten glass was pressed in, probably from the mold having not been properly cleaned after a previous use. There is one very minor spot of damage, or slightly irregular tooth. There is a very small, hard to detect flat flake on the exterior of one tooth. Have tried to capture it in photos, but it is very difficult to capture and therefore not any kind of a significant issue. That one tooth also was either not completely filled with glass at the pressing, or the very tip may have been slightly polished, again, very difficult to detect and photograph. The last 3 photos have either an arrow or a circle that shows that point. The color and overall beauty of this bowl far outweighs any minor faults. Without knowing where to look, you would search a while to find that one tooth with a very minor issue. This bowl is gorgeous, and very few of these in aqua opal come up for sale, less than 50 recorded sales in the past 8 years. In most cases, there will be internal bubbles in the glass, straw marks, inclusions within the glass, and occasionally some roughness/excess glass, especially around mold seams, or from wear/use. None of this is considered damage, and will not be called out unless deemed to be excessive.
Please refrain from bidding if you consider any of these conditions as damage.
We are dealing with 100 year old glass here that has been used, and those manufacturing processes were not up to today's standards in terms of quality control. In my mind, those conditions give character to the glass and validate it's age.
