    History of the Collection:
*No Additional information about the listing in the following text, just a story about the history of the collection. Feel free to read if you would like*
My father was a passionate rock hound ever since he was a young child in the late 40's. He traveled all over the west coast to mine materials anything from jaspers and agates to opals. He was known for filling up his pack horses with rocks instead of hunting for game animals. That was back when things were more wild and not so traveled by motorized vehicles. Where my father did his rock hounding/game hunting was always miles from any road. He would gather up any type of jaspers and agates that he saw as beautiful and unique as he traveled the back country on horseback back before there were claims at least out there at the time.
Then in the early 90's he moved to Eastern Oregon because he knew this was where a lot of the good jaspers and agates were. He knew this was where he could find the best of the best in the Jasper world. He began meeting all the famous rock hounds in the area by attending all the rocks shows every year and even having his own booth in Thunderegg days in Nyssa, back when it used to be a big rock show that attracted rock hounds from all around the country.
He was what we all would call a social butterfly when it came to rocks. He quickly learned of where all the good spots were to find the rarest of materials. He was also a bartering man so trading some info or rough rock for another was common practice for him. He started putting a map together of all the 'top secret spots' as he would call them, as he was a navy veteran of course thats what he would say. He spent most of his retirement hounding all over the Owhyees which is in Malheur County, he also spent a lot of time in Central Oregon mining and collecting rocks. He also spent quite a lot of time panning for gold.
Then In the mid 90's is when he got very serious, he bought out a locally well known rock shop in Idaho and that's when the collection became massive there was at least 50 tons added to his already large collection. Stones from all over the United States and Beyond. A portion of it was grave yard point plume, some of which is super high quality and can only be found in collections like these or on eBay.
In the mid 90's is when I was old enough to start going out rock hounding with my father.  My father and I spent nearly every weekend during the school year and most of the summers rock hounding. I can still smell all the wild flowers that bloom by the thousands in the spring time. I always say I spent most of my childhood in the back of a pickup. I used to drop chips down between the bed and the cab because I was feeding the ground squirrels. LOL Some of my greatest memories were out in the middle of no where rockhounding my with my father. I remember digging up dino bones just a short drive from our house. Even today it hasn't been mined up like other places. I'm guessing people just don't know about it. Another spot where there are thousands of fish bones sticking out of the side of a huge DE cliff face. Unearthing a huge petrified tree stump, that after about 2 weeks of digging my father then realized that there was going to be no way of getting it out because after digging up 12 feet of it and it was still going there was no way we could have moved it. Not without sending in large equipment 40 miles on a dirt road. I still remember covering it back up and moving on to the next amazing find.  I remember mining for Idaho fire opal and shouting "fire in the hole" when I found a large stunning piece of fire opal. Unfortunately, that guy didn't let me keep it. I could go on for days about the memories and what rock hounding has taught me and suppose you could say its in my blood.
Then in the mid 2000's the trips out the country side began to slow down and my father's focus moved to spending lots of time sorting and bucketing the many piles he had. He then spent a large portion of his time slabbing and cabbing his finds over the years. He also learned to flint nap during this time, some older men at the rock shows taught him the technique.
Then around 2010 my fathers health began to deteriorate and he wasn't able to enjoy the rocks like he did over the last 60 years. As time went on he knew that his life work had to go to someone. His oldest wasn't interested and he knew that it wouldn't be appreciated like it should. So he called and invited me home to discuss what would happen with his life long collection, before showing up I had to no idea what a wonderful and beautiful gift I was about to be given.  I believe he always knew that I would be the one to enjoy the rocks just as he did and that I possessed the knowledge to undergo such a big task. During the conversation I tried to convince him that he should sell them and enjoy the earnings of his labor. That he should use the money earned on himself and my mother, to basically go on vacation and enjoy it. He thanked me for thinking of it that way but assured me that the rocks have already given him the enjoyment of a lifetime, quite literally. He told me that he understands that I couldn't possibly keep all of them and that I should sell what I can't keep. I agreed, because those were his wishes. Then on a cold January morning in 2018 he passed away peacefully in his sleep. I feel like it is my duty and a privilege to tell the story behind this collection simply because its over 60 years old and it was his life work. He is missed and remembered by so many in the rock world.
