    Description

    Petrified wood   (Incertae sedis)
Grassy Mountain Formation Early to Middle Pliocene
Grassy Mountain, Malheur County, near Vale, Oregon
Beautiful agatized specimen from the noted Grassy Mountain locality, which has arguably produced some of the most colorful specimens in the entire world. Mustard yellow, deep bluish purple, lighter blue gray.  Aesthetics are at the top of the list for this slab.  Totally unfractured, growth rings suggested by alternating yellows and blues.  We expect the material from Grassy Mountain to become very scarce in the not too distant future - gold mining is being planned and the area will become a giant open pit mine.  Any petrified wood will be buried in spoil piles or be crushed along with the rest of the gold ore.  A sad ending to a fantastic petrified wood locality.  Grassy Mountain specimens should become very scarce in the market.  This one is a knockout. It measures
6.75” x 3.5" on the polished face and it is a very thin slab 3/16” in thickness.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don't guess and when we don't know, we say so!  Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
