    Description

Willow petrified wood limb with knot (Salix sp.)
    Miocene, Chalk Lake Formation
    "The Bruneau Wood Pile"
    Bruneau, Idaho
This cute limb section has GREAT PRESERVATION, NICE WOODY CHARACTER WITH A KNOT and it is priced right.  This is a specimen that will be immediately recognized as petrified wood by even the most novice of observers.
This one is cut and polished on one end so that you can see the excellent preservation.
It is somewhat unique in that it is permineralized by the mineral francolite, a member of the apatite group.  This contrasts with the more typical petrified wood that is permineralized by the silica mineral, chalcedony.
It is a limb of willow - check out our photomicrographs with this listing and note the very closely spaced, quite small vessels that
carried the water and nutrients up to the leaves where the life sustaining sugars were produced by photosynthesis.  It measures  1/2" in diameter on the polished face and it is 2 1/8" in length.
We specialize in petrified wood and plant fossils which are accurately identified as to locality of origin and family, genus or species. We don’t guess and when we don’t know, we say so! Your specimen will come with a label identifying the specimen, the locality where it was collected, the formation and age of the material and any other pertinent information we have gleaned from our literature search.
